Privacy

The names you check stay in your browser. We do not store them, and we do not need an account or a cookie to answer.

Names you type

The name check runs inside your browser. When you press Check name, the page splits the name into words and loads a few small statistics files that hold data about those words. Each file covers about one in 192 of all known name words, chosen by a fixed code computed from the word, so the file names do not say which word you typed. The name itself is never sent to us, never written into the page address, and never stored.

The country you pick is used the same way: only in your browser, to choose the conventions that apply.

Your approximate country

To pick a starting example from a naming tradition different from yours, the page asks our hosting provider, Cloudflare, which country your connection comes from. The answer is a two-letter country code. It is used once, in your browser, and is not stored by us.

Hosting and server logs

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address and basic request data (page requested, time, browser type) to deliver the pages and to protect the site against abuse. See Cloudflare's privacy policy. We do not keep our own logs of visitors.

Cookies, analytics and advertising

The site does not set cookies today. If we add privacy-friendly visit counting, it will be cookieless and will not identify you.

We plan to show advertising through Google AdSense. When that starts, Google and its partners may use cookies to show and measure ads, and in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland you will be asked for consent first. This page will be updated before any ad appears, with a link to manage your choices.

Where the name data comes from

Our statistics describe names, not people. They are built from public sources: Wikidata (released into the public domain under CC0), US Social Security Administration counts of given names, and US Census Bureau counts of family names. We use these to estimate how a word is usually used (as a given name or a family name, in which countries, and how often by women or men). We do not use or show ethnicity or race data, even where a source contains it.

Your rights

Because we do not store names or keep visitor logs, we usually hold no personal data about you. If you live in the EU, the UK or another place with data protection law, you can still ask us what we hold and ask us to correct or delete it, and you can complain to your local data protection authority.
